・英国では長年、安くて豊かな石炭ガスが使われていたが、石炭ガスは一酸化炭素が多いので、ドアや窓が閉めきられていると不幸な結果を招いた。1950年代末には自殺者の半数近くがガス自殺だった。ところが1970年代初めに天然ガスへの転換がゆきわたると、英国の自殺率は三分の一近くも低下し、その後も低いまま留まっている。人々はほかの手段を探して自殺しようとはしなかったわけだ。自己コントロールの問題ではスピードが決め手になる。だから、わずかな手間や面倒が生命を救う可能性があるのだ。
