１．研究大学の登場

（１）それまでの大学

　何世紀もの間、大学は研究なんてものとは、およそ無関係な場所だった。
　大学はずっと聖職者や医者や法律家になるために行くところだった。　
　
　これらの職業は、同業者（すでに聖職者や医者や法律家である連中、実際には連中がつくっている組織）に認められないとなることができない。勝手になったと言い張っても、もぐり扱いされるだけである。
　こうした閉鎖的同業者集団の再生産を担う大学は、同業者集団と同様に何世紀もほとんど変わらなかった。
　何世紀もずっと神学部と医学部と法学部だけで、今と違って学部が増えることも、新しい学問分野が加わることもなかった。
　
　たとえば、後に自然科学と呼ばれることになる知的活動やその成果は、いくつか例外があるとはいえ、長い間大学に居場所を見つけることができなかった。
　
　１８世紀の半ばになっても、ある大学人はたとえば次のように主張した。

「学問を改良し、新発見を行うことは、高等・初等を問わず学校の義務ではない。
　　そのようなことはむしろ、少数の幸運な天才たちの義務、すなわち、公的な制度をあげよというなら、科学アカデミーの義務なのである」

　当時最も先進的な大学として名の知られた（ドイツ地域の学生の数が半減した１８世紀から１９世紀の時期にこの大学の学生数は減少しなかった事実はその傍証になるだろうか）ゲッティンゲン大学の教授（J.D.ミヒァエリスの言葉だという）にして、この有様だった。
